Lexington, KY - If you own a business, you'll be interested in this story. Businesses are receiving faxes that seem to be advising of a chance to make some money, but will only cause you to LOSE money.
The letterhead makes the letter appear to be from the U.S. Department of Transportation Procurement Office.
It states that their records show that your business is currently registered as a prospective contractor for procurements issued by the Department of Transportation.
However, the letter says, you have not submitted your financial information release form. It urges you to complete the form and fax it to a number they provide. It looks legitimate.
The D.O.T. has a warning on their website about this scam. They say DOT does not require any financial information to be submitted in order to be eligible for procurement. They say it's just an attempt by con artists to steal your bank information.
One area business actually fell for it and sent it in. Then they learned it was a scam and were able to stop the fraud before it was too late.
Warn your office staff…..if you get this letter on your business fax machine, don't fall for it!
